Oil & Gas UK Sustainability Development Report Moves Online

Oil & Gas UK's new online sustainable development report for the UK offshore oil and gas sector goes live today to encourage greater engagement and dialogue with its stakeholders.

The new-look document is the seventh sectoral sustainable development report issued by Oil & Gas UK. It has been redeveloped as a dynamic and interactive web-based reporting tool to allow users to navigate through the different sections of the report and obtain detailed information and data analysis on the social, environmental and economic issues affecting the UK oil and gas industry.

The report highlights the challenge of sustainability in an extractive industry. It examines how the benefits of indigenous oil and gas production can be balanced with good stewardship of natural resources and environmental care, the ability to provide technologies and supply chain capabilities, the management of the sectors potential legacy and the broader objective of contributing towards a lower carbon future.

Environmental indicators such as atmospheric emissions, flaring and venting, marine oil discharges and accidental spills, marine chemical discharges, noise and waste disposal and decommissioning are included.

Malcolm Webb, Oil & Gas UK's chief executive, said: "The role of oil and gas in sustaining our society is pivotal, and its importance can not be underplayed. Delivering improvements on our key sustainable objectives requires collaboration between exploration and production companies and its supply chain as well as an effective partnership with the Government. The report shows the upstream industry rising to meet the challenges of sustaining the production of primary energy supplies for the country whilst managing environmental impacts in challenging physical circumstances.

"The new online development reporting framework will enable the sector to continue monitoring and assessing how well it is meeting its sustainable objectives in a more efficient and cohesive manor, while also encouraging wider stakeholder engagement."

Oil & Gas UK has regularly reviewed its sustainability strategy since 2000 in consultation with industry members, government officials and NGOs, publishing revisions every two years, and issuing progress reports in the intervening years. The new online reporting mechanism enables reports to be continually updated and ensures it is accessible to all stakeholders in the UK oil and gas industry.
