Oil, Gas, Energy Law (OGEL, ISSN 1875-418X, www.ogel.org) will publish a special issue of its journal in 2010 focusing on the issue of resource development and indigenous people.

This will feature articles, case notes, report extracts and other materials relevant to interaction between minerals & petroleum development activity and indigenous people. The special issue will include new material as well as collating previous published material where of significant use in this area.

Submissions of material are invited for inclusion on the special issue. Potential topics to be covered include:

* geopolitical aspects of indigenous rights; * international law, standards and procedures; * indigenous - company agreements; * indigenous - broader community interaction, including evolving legal environments; * dealing with historic disadvantage/discrimination; * the role of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the formulation of international law and standards and the negotiation of particular agreements; * free prior informed consent; * protection of indigenous heritage; * case examples, particularly examining national and local laws and practices.

The guest editors for this special issue are Kenneth Culotta (King & Spalding) and John Southalan (CEPMLP). Their aim is for the issue to be very much directed to practical, on-the-ground, problems and guidance. The special issue will deal little with theories (economic, political, cultural or otherwise) which focus simply on the necessity for mining or importance of protecting indigenous interests; instead the focus will be on examples, structures and frameworks that help engage and address the interaction between resource development and indigenous peoples, and practical legal and business issues arising out of current and proposed approaches to resolving the issues that accompany development in areas populated by indigenous peoples.
