As a direct response to feedback from the SPE Member community in the UK, the Aberdeen SPE Committee has arranged the inaugural SPE Smart Energy Conference in Aberdeen, Scotland on 09 and 10 June 2009. This Smart Energy event will complement the SPE Digital Energy and Intelligent Energy events held in Houston and Amsterdam, respectively.
With the financial markets in turmoil, global reductions in energy demands and the subsequent drop in oil prices to one third of their 2008 peak, the opportunity to explore and review new ways or working and smarter technologies is very relevant.
As has been the case in previous downturns, will the oil and service companies shrink their workforce due to reduced demand or does the uncertainty provide opportunities for organizations to fundamentally change how future hydrocarbons are extracted and delivered?
In these financially constrained times, how will organizations demonstrate and then measure their return on investment for the new workflows, processes and technologies.
The Smart Energy technologies and initiatives that will be presented have moved on from proofs of concept or field trials over to full field deployments. Workflows, processes and technologies have been demonstrated during field operations and these Smart Energy enablers are continually being developed.
The changes to the technologies and workflows deployed will inevitably result in both people and process questions and issues. The 2009 SPE Smart Energy Conference will present several case studies related to the people, processes, and technology issues and will examine the associated challenges.
This year's Conference Committee consists of oil industry subject matter experts and oil company executives currently active within the Aberdeen section of the SPE.
