Fresh signals of recruitment growth in the offshore oil and gas industry may require operators to reinvigorate their hiring practices to make sure they're securing the right personnel.
The recent annual oil & gas survey conducted by Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce showed 88% of operators expected to increase their core staff over the next three years – double the figure from the previous survey.
"Despite the economic challenges facing the offshore industry, it's heartening to see a number of positive indicators in the 2011 survey," says Alan Golightly, Chief Operating Officer with upstream oil and gas recruitment specialist Infinity Resources International.
"However, as operators look to bolster staff numbers, it's important they take close account of the challenges involved in finding the right people to fill the right job in what remains a competitive recruitment market.
"Increasingly, companies are broadening their outlook beyond the North Sea market to encompass the international industry.
"They also need to have robust processes and procedures in place to support their recruitment strategy. In the modern industry, it's about identifying personnel not only with the right skills and experience, but also with an attitude and approach to work that reflect those of the company.
"Such a strategy can contribute significantly to enhancing everyday operational performance, and can also play a key part in retaining talent in the longer term."
Aberdeen-based Infinity specialises in three areas of oil and gas recruitment support: topsides, subsea and drilling.
It has placed engineers in a number of oil and gas producing regions including the North Sea, the United States, South East Asia, Australia, West Africa and emerging areas in mainland Europe.
