A record year for team participation at the BG Energy Challenge has been further boosted by the exciting news that this year’s event is to be broadcast on national television for the first time. The BG Energy Challenge 2009 – UK, taking place from 9 - 11 July in Bangor, Wales, will be part of the Intelligent Sport® World Series to be aired on Channel 4 in the UK and globally on Transworld Sport and other national broadcasters.
With team registration now closed, the largest fundraising and networking event for the energy industry will see 44 teams on the start line ready to face two days and nights of physically and mentally gruelling challenges. These are likely to include kayaking, orienteering, mountain biking, code breaking and complex construction with action from the final stage providing the coverage for the 30 minute TV programme.
As well as using the opportunity to build relationships with their team members and network with the other companies taking part, the teams will each be raising a minimum of £5,000 for nominated charities CARE International and Sparks. Now in its fourteenth year, the funds raised in 2009 will build on the £2 million raised for charity in the UK to date.
Catherine McQuilken, BG Group Sponsorship Manager said: “We’re really excited that this year’s event will be televised in a number of key BG Group countries. It will provide a further opportunity to highlight the networking and team bonding benefits offered by the BG Energy Challenge to stakeholders and the energy industry, as well as demonstrate the outstanding charitable fundraising by the teams.”
The confirmation of a record number of teams and the TV deal follow the recent announcement by hosts BG Group that the Energy Institute (EI) will be the first official media partner to the BG Energy Challenge 2009 – UK. The partnership will generate pre and post event coverage in the EI’s main publications, Petroleum Review and Energy World.
Louise Kingham FEI, FRSA, Chief Executive, Energy Institute said: “The Energy Institute is delighted to be partnering with the BG Energy Challenge 2009 - UK. The event encompasses teamwork, excellence, strategic planning and physical endurance which are qualities that the EI actively endorses. The BG Energy Challenge also provides an excellent opportunity to raise funds for deserving causes. The EI wishes the teams and BG Energy Challenge all the best for this year’s event.”
