Oil Industry and University link proves a three-fold success

IDS, the world’s largest provider of web-based reporting services to the upstream oil and gas industry, has proved the three-fold benefits of companies linking with Universities. William Sellick, a student at Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, and protégé of IDS, has been awarded several top accolades for his Computing Science honours project, exploring the real-time elements of WITSML, throughout which he has been backed by IDS. The prize-giving will take place on Friday 27th June, at Robert Gordon University, at 2pm.

Mr Sellick has been awarded the Francis Morrison Award for the BSC (Hons) computing student who achieves the Best Honours Individual Project involving Software Development and the SAIC Prize for the student with the highest academic achievement on his course. He has also been nominated for Young Software Engineer of the Year with ScotlandIS, the trade body for information and communication technologies in Scotland.

IDS sponsored Mr Sellick’s honours project, providing him with guidance, tools, contacts, workspace and knowledge. The initiative has seen benefits for the University, IDS and, of course, William himself. The university will receive a copy of the project, IDS will benefit from the R&D task and William will graduate and continue his career with IDS.

Kenny Steele, General Operations Manager at IDS said: “We are delighted that William has won these awards. We see sponsoring students as an important role for businesses and we feel there are advantages for all parties. Furthermore, we are pleased to be able to show that smaller companies are also able to benefit from sponsoring students. We are keen to work closely with Robert Gordon University again in the future as we feel we have a close connection, with all the development staff in our Aberdeen office being graduates of the University.”
