Aberdeen Oil Services Company Sponsors Junior Karate Team

Ronnie Watt, President of the World Karate Championships, is delighted to be sending an outstanding team of students to compete in this month’s 6th Annual Junior & Cadet World Championships and World Cup for Children competitions hosted by the World Karate Confederation in Slovenia. The team, comprised of 14 of his best boys and girls, will be accompanied by eight officials to the WKC World Junior Championships hosted in Novo Mesto, Slovenia from 24-26 October 2008.

The competition is one of the largest in the world, with more than 1,900 competitors. Mr Watt aims to build upon the North of Scotland team’s already successful record. During the past 10 years, the team has won over 23 gold, silver and bronze medals at World and European karate events. The squad have been working out extremely hard, four times weekly. This year the team hopes to pick up several more medals. At the last WKC World Championships in 2006, 14-year old Lisa Calder beat the current Russian Champion to take Gold and the World Championship for her age group.

The squad, which is self-funded, has raised over £20,000 to attend the championships by holding fundraising events throughout the year. Aberdeen-based Downhole Products, a Varel International company, is this year’s sponsor. The oilfield equipment company recently donated £1,000 to help fund this year’s trip to the World Championships.

The squad is also looking forward to attending the WKC Junior and Children's Championships that are scheduled to take place in Venice in June 2010.
