ABERMED NETS £5 MILLION OIL AND GAS CONTRACTS

Leading industrial and occupational health specialist Abermed has been awarded multi-million pound contracts with Shell U.K. Ltd and Transocean to provide medical services to staff.

The separate deals, which have a combined value of more than £5million, will see Abermed looking after all aspects of occupational health and emergency medical cover for more than 3,000 staff on and offshore.

This will range from the provision of rig medics and doctors experienced in practising offshore to health checks and medical examinations.

Abermed was chosen by Shell and Transocean for its specialist knowledge of the oil and gas industry, which currently accounts for more than 70% of its work and has established the company as the largest provider of Oil and Gas UK medicals.

The contracts are the latest success for Abermed, which has enjoyed rapid growth over the past year with the acquisition of a major share in a medical care company in Kazakhstan providing a platform for further expansion into the Caspian Sea region.

The Shell contract will see Abermed providing medical cover for more than 1,200 employees.

Abermed is already responsible for providing full topside medical cover offshore in the Northern, Southern, Central North Sea and Irish Sea, including the East Shetland Basin.

The new contract will include 24/7 telephone access to a doctor, mobilisation of medical staff if required, support in the event of a medical evacuation and support with offshore diagnosis and treatment. Abermed will also provide accredited offshore medics for each site and occupational health cover, such as risk assessment and monitoring, as well as training.

The Shell contract has seen more than 30 rig medics and medical and administrative staff transferring to Abermed.

Meanwhile, the Transocean contract covers its 1,550 employees offshore and 400 onshore staff in the UK.

Abermed will be contracted to provide a wide range of services, including topside cover, repatriation facilities from remote locations, offshore medicals, medic supervision, drug and alcohol screening, travel and vaccination clinics, sick bay management and occupational health surveillance.

The agreement also includes consultations with dentists, dieticians, physiotherapists and counsellors, as well as the provision for training and medical seminars.

James Miller, Managing Director of Abermed, said: "We are delighted to have been awarded these two significant contracts with both Shell and Transocean, which demonstrates our high level of experience and excellence in both the North Sea and internationally.

"This is a very exciting opportunity for us to provide a wide range of our key medical and occupational health services to valued clients. Abermed has consistently grown and developed over the years and we are in a strong position to offer a wide array of health solutions, particularly in the global oil and gas industry.

"We look forward to working in partnership with Shell and Transocean and to further developing our services to the energy industry."

Abermed is headquartered in Aberdeen, with offices in Dyce, Dundee, Teesside, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Great Yarmouth and Norwich. It also has operations in Kazakhstan and Oman.
