Senex Energy Limited, as Operator of the South Australian permit PEL 104 joint venture, advises that Jaguar-1 exploration well is to be plugged and abandoned after reaching a depth of 1,850 metres in the Hutton Sandstone.
The primary target was sands of the mid Birkhead Formation with secondary targets in the overlying Namur Formation and the underlying Hutton Sandstone.
The well encountered a developed stratigraphic channel with gas shows at the top of the target interval, indicating the presence of a hydrocarbon system. However the channel in this location was filled with fine grained, low density mudstone and siltstone rather than the prognosed sand development.
Senex Managing Director Ian Davies said 'While the result of Jaguar-1 is clearly disappointing, the well did confirm the presence of a developed stratigraphic channel as prognosed by our seismic modelling.'
'Senex is now focused on using the results from Jaguar-1 to continue to build on our understanding of the Birkhead channel western flank oil play to increase future chances of success in our remaining exploration prospects in the area,' he said.
Ensign Rig #48 will now move to the Growler-11 development well targeting oil production from the Birkhead Formation in the Growler oil field in PRL 15.
Senex Energy holds a 60% interest in PRL 15 and PEL 104 and is Operator of the joint ventures, with the remaining 40% interest held by Beach Energy Limited.
