The Vice-Premier of the Russian Federation, Igor Sechin and the head of the international oil and gas giant Shell, Peter Voser met this week to discuss the possibility of a partnership between Shell and the largest Russian oil company Rosneft according to the press-service of the government.
The negotiations, where the head of Rosneft, Eduard Khudainatov was present, became the first public step by Rosneft in their search for a new partner for the development of the Kara Sea shelf projects after the failure of the alliance of the Russian company with BP.
Mr Sechin had already named Shell as one of the candidates to replace BP - among others are Chevron, ExxonMobil, the Chinese CNPC, the Malaysian Petronas and the Brazilian Petrobas.
Last week, Rosneft commented on its withdrawal from the proposed strategic alliance with BP after several months of expectations and said that BP and the shareholders of its joint venture in Russia TNK-BP should be able to solve their problems.
Mr Sechin told reporters then that Rosneft fought to protect its interests and managed to escape any damage.
The Russian shareholders of TNK-BP, the AAR consortium, froze the deal of Rosneft and BP through their court actions in February and accused BP of not informing Rosneft in full about the terms of the shareholder agreement with TNK-BP.
