Russia's state run energy giant Gazprom has expressed its intention to be part of Iran's Azar field development project. Speaking to reporters in Bushehr, Russia's energy minister Sergei Shmatko confirmed the news, "We have reached an agreement with the Iranian oil minister to clear within the next month whether or not Gazprom will take part in developing Azar field."
Iran officials in August stated that Gazprom will be excluded from the project for failing to respond to Iran's ultimatums.
Russia was one of many countries that withdrew from Iran's energy sector following international sanctions. Iran on its part chose to remain unfazed and continues to fund nuclear programmes claiming the sanctions have little impact on the country's ambitious nuclear future.
"The imposed sanctions on Iranian nation have increased our power in the region ... We will strongly continue our work in the nuclear field and will not pay any attention to the sanction," Fereydoun Abbasi-Davani, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation (AEOI) told reporters in the city of Bushehr on occasion of the unveiling of Iran's first nuclear power plant in the city which is built by Russia. The nuclear facility is the first of many projects in the offing by Tehran.
