Galp Energia and Visabeira Moçambique have signed a cooperation memorandum for the development of an agro industrial project in Mozambique that aims the production, commercialization and distribution of biofuels, to export to Portugal where they will be processed at Galp Energia’s biodiesel units and for production of biodiesel in Mozambique for domestic consumption.
Moçamgalp, a Galp Energia and Visabeira company will be in charge of the development of the project and will carry out the land identification process for oilseeds production that could be up to an area of 150,000 hectares and the establishment of a company that will develop agricultural and associated activities, including the transformation of oilseeds in vegetable oils that constitute raw materials or other semi finished products to be used in other industries.
Moçamgalp will also promote the construction of an industrial unit for vegetable oil production part to export to Portugal where they will be processed at Galp Energia’s refineries and transformed in hydrogenated biodiesel for incorporation in transportation fuels. The part which is not targeted for the Portuguese market will be allocated to biodiesel production in an industrial unit to be built in Mozambique for domestic consumption.
This agreement, signed during the visit of the Portuguese President to Mozambique, envisages reinforcing the cooperation between Galp Energia and Visabeira for the development of transportation fuels industry in Portugal and Mozambique, oriented by sustainability principles in social, economical and environmental terms and producing vegetable oils that do not interfere with the food chain in Mozambique.
With this agreement Galp Energia takes an important step forward in its strategy for biofuels, reduces energy dependence on fossil fuels and contributes to positioning Portugal at the forefront of biofuel production.
