Energy Companies Join Forces to Take up the Fund Raising Challenge

Tuesday, May 06, 2008

BG Group, the global natural gas business, has launched its annual BG Energy Challenge 2008 – UK event and is calling on all companies associated with the energy industry to join forces to raise funds for charity. The event taking place in Plymouth, Devon from 10-12 July is part of a global series which will see fundraising efforts add to the £3.9 million raised to date by BG Energy Challenge events worldwide.

Mark Carne, Executive Vice President and Managing Director, Europe and Central Asia BG Group, said:

“Having taken part for the last two years, I know just how mentally and physically challenging the event can be. It provides a unique platform for companies to network and bond internally, whilst raising vital funds for our two chosen charities. We are extremely proud of the fundraising we have achieved to date and we are determined to improve on the £205,000 raised last year.”

In addition to raising £5,000 each for charity, teams from companies including Centrica, GDF Britain, KPMG and BG Group, will have to overcome three days of tough physical, intellectual and strategic challenges including activities such as orienteering, mountain biking, and complex construction. The event is recognised as an opportunity to build relationships with colleagues, network with employees within the energy industry and most importantly, raise funds for CARE International and Sparks, the international aid and children’s medical research charities benefiting this year.

Nikki Lebedis, Senior Analyst at AMEC’s Aberdeen office said:
“We are delighted that AMEC has once again committed its support to the BG Energy Challenge here in the UK. We are positive our team will meet the challenges they face both in the charity fundraising and at the event itself.

BG Group has created a unique opportunity for companies across the energy sector to collectively work towards helping richly deserving causes. From a participant perspective, it helps bring out the best in individuals within a positive team environment, which can only benefit them and AMEC as a company.”

This year, legend jockey and charity champion Richard Dunwoody is heading up the charity team at the event. As a Sparks ambassador he has been working with John Shanley, CEO of Sparks and former Head of Mobil in the fundraising efforts by raising awareness of this year’s event.

There are still spaces available for this year’s event and companies associated with the energy industry wishing to take part can apply online at: www.bg-energychallenge.com
