As the BG Energy Challenge 2008 - UK approaches, many of the energy associated companies taking part will be beginning their fitness training in preparation for the variety of physical, mental and strategic challenges they will face at this year’s event in Plymouth on 10-12 July. However one team from host BG Group are already well ahead of the pack with reserves in plentiful supply; the entire “Fit for the Future” department working on best business practice within the company have been training to win a place on the five man team!
Given the short term project environment of their department, the 18 current employees on the programme have all been training and fundraising together for their BG Energy Challenge team. Not only has this helped encourage each other’s physical training, it has forged relationships and friendships and improved communication within the team that might not otherwise be achieved within the short time frame they work together.
Mike Chapplow, Change Manager in the Fit for the Future team at BG Group said:
“We hope to illustrate what the BG Energy Challenge is all about in providing an excellent example of how companies are recognising the value of combining internal team building with industry wide networking. And with our employees training hard to secure a place in the team, we are already reaping the rewards with personal fitness and departmental team bonding.“
With the entire department raising monies for the two benefiting charities, CARE International and Sparks, the “Fit for the Future” team is also hoping to lead the way with their fundraising pledge. Together they have completed a 40 mile bike ride, 20 mile hike and 10k run to help raise the minimum £5,000 required by each team. And whilst the final team will be narrowed down to five members selected for their fitness, key skills, commitment to training and contribution to fundraising, they will undoubtedly be well supported by their similarly fit colleagues cheering on the sidelines.
