Description
UCC Geology Department
The Geology Department has eight academic staff, two research staff and a similar number of full-time postgraduate research students. It offers two single honours undergraduate degree programmes - Geology and Earth Science - and contributes significantly to the Environmental Science degree.
The Geology degree programme, emphasises geological processes such as the evolution of the earth's crust and interior, minerals, rocks and fossils. Also included are specialised topics such as petroleum geology, evolutionary theory, geophysical exploration, hydrogeology, engineering geology and environmental geology. There is a strong emphasis on field work throughout the entire Geology curriculum.
The Earth Science degree programme comprises an integrated study of the Earth and its processes with emphasis on its physical environment and resources. Also included is the study of people and their interaction with the environments in which they live. This degree programme is taught in conjunction with staff from the Department of Geography.
The Environmental Science degree programme is a strongly interdisciplinary degree programme that integrates the earth sciences with biological, physical and chemical and mathematical sciences. Its principal aim is to explore our knowledge of the natural world around us.
The Geology Department has a wide range of research interests, the principal strengths being: Palaeozoic and Mesozoic palynology, studies of the Irish offshore sedimentary basins, Palaeozoic stratigraphy, fluid inclusion thermobarometry, the structural evolution of high grade gneiss terrains, Caledonian and Hercynian tectonics of the British Isles and adjacent areas, the geochemistry and petrogenesis of basaltic magmas and of andesitic arc volcanoes, trace element geochemistry of the lithospheric mantle, petrogenetic and structural studies of Caledonian magmatism, engineering and environmental geology, geophysical modelling.
