Tuesday, March 02, 2010

At a recent industry dinner, the Energy Institute (EI) presented Sir Ian Wood, Chairman, Wood Group, with the esteemed Cadman Award in recognition of outstanding services to the petroleum industry.

Sir Ian gave a keynote address entitled 'The future of Aberdeen as an energy capital' and the award was presented by James Smith FEI, Chairman, Shell, and EI President at the EI Aberdeen, Highlands & Islands branch annual dinner on Thursday, 25 February.

James Smith CBE FEI, Chairman, Shell, and EI President, says, 'Sir Ian Wood is one of the great figures of North Sea oil. He has built a hugely successful oil services group, centred on Aberdeen but with real global reach. He has been a key moving force for the offshore industry, promoting the technology, skills, partnerships and sound regulation that have made the North Sea such an enduring world class oil and gas province.'

Denis Pinto MEI, Chairman, EI Aberdeen, Highlands & Islands branch, adds, 'Sir Ian's contribution to the UK upstream oil and gas effort is a remarkable one; not just in terms of taking what was a traditional Aberdeen family fishing industry enterprise and, over a period of some forty years, transforming it to a global energy services group, but for his tireless contribution to the wider UK industry through thick and thin, and promoting the capabilities of the North Sea supply chain around the world.'

Sir Ian Wood is the founder and now Chairman of the international energy services company, Wood Group. Having built the Wood Group up from a family business, it has continued to flourish, providing essential support for the continued operation, servicing and maintenance of oil and gas facilities. Employing over 28,000 people across 50 countries, Sir Ian and his team provide crucial engineering advice and solutions to the energy industry.

Having held various industry and education appointments including co-chairing the UK Oil & Gas Industry Leadership Team and Chairman of Scottish Enterprise, Sir Ian is Chancellor of Robert Gordon University. He was awarded the CBE in 1982 in the New Year's Honours List, and a Knighthood in the 1994 New Year's Honours List for services to the UK oil and gas industry and enterprise in Scotland.

The Cadman Award is made on an international basis and commemorates the late Lord Cadman of Silverdale, Chairman of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company (now BP), and Past President of the Energy Institute. This year the award is kindly sponsored by Shell.
