Mariner Energy Oil Rig Incident In Gulf Of Mexico
Thursday, September 02, 2010
West of the platform where the Deepwater Horizon platform exploded in April causing months of devastation, a new blast has ripped through an oil rig.
The coastguard said all 13 workers on board are alive. They were thrown into the sea. They have all been accounted for but a rescue operation is thought to be underway.
Unconfirmed reports said the rig is the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy. This is not believed to be an active well.
The blast occurred around 80 miles south of Vermilion Bay along the central Louisiana coast. There are currently no sightings of oil in the water.
