MMS Adds Regulatory Expert to Competition Team
Friday, March 19, 2010
National law firm Maclay Murray & Spens (MMS) has strengthened its already highly regarded EU, competition and regulatory team, with a senior appointment to its London office. William Sprigge joins the firm from the Postal Services Commission, where he was Legal Director and drafted the original licensing regime for postal services in the UK. In his new role, Sprigge will help develop the firm's regulatory and public sector client base, building on his experience in government and utility regulation.
Sprigge commented: 'Competition and regulation are key legal issues for businesses in all sectors, particularly the utilities. They are likely to become even more important over time.'
Sprigge has spent his legal career to-date 'in-house', in businesses in shipping and agriculture and in government, at DTI (now BIS) where he advised on investigations under the Companies, Insurance Companies and Financial Services Acts. Before running the Postcomm legal function William headed the legal team at Ofgem. He is a barrister and a chartered secretary.
Michael Dean, head of the EU, competition and regulatory team at MMS, commented: 'William's considerable in-house experience with various government and regulatory bodies gives him a real insight and depth of knowledge. He will be a great asset to the team and play a key role in continuing to grow our practice UK-wide.'
The appointment brings the total number of lawyers in the firm's EU, competition and regulatory team to 14. The team was recently rated in the top tier by Legal 500 for Scotland, which describes its cartels practice as 'market leading' and highlights the number of high profile cases on which it is currently advising.
