A spinoff from oil and gas company MarkWest Hydrocarbon, MarkWest Energy Partners was created in 2002 to hold the natural gas gathering and processing assets of its parent. MarkWest Energy Partners has natural gas and natural gas liquids pipelines, storage terminals, and gathering and processing pipelines and fractionation plants in the Appalachian Basin, Michigan, and the Southwest. MarkWest Hydrocarbon retains a 17% stake in the partnership and controls its general partner. In 2007 the company agreed to acquire MarkWest Hydrocarbon.
