WINGAS GmbH & Co. KG

WINGAS GmbH & Co. KG is a joint venture of Wintershall Holding AG in Kassel, Germany's largest crude oil and natural gas producer, and Russia's OAO Gazprom. Wintershall has a stake in WINGAS of 50 percent plus one share, the Russian natural gas producer 50 percent minus one share.

WINGAS has been active in gas distribution since 1993 and supplies natural gas to public utilities, regional gas suppliers, industrial companies and power plants in Germany and other European countries. The WINGAS companies also market transport, storage and fiber-optic capacities, are active in natural gas trading and procurement, and operate gas pipelines and storage facilities. The pipeline network of its subsidiary WINGAS TRANSPORT GmbH now extends to over 2,100 kilometers.

Russia's Gazprom and BASF subsidiary Wintershall teamed up more than 17 years ago in order to sell and market natural gas together. The aims of the two partners were to supply natural gas on competitive terms, to optimize its use and to secure its supply in the long term. WINGAS became an initiator of competition in the German energy market, which had been shaped by monopolistic structures until recent years, and will continue to help shape this market in future.

Since WINGAS entered the market its sales of natural gas have risen continually. In 2009 WINGAS closed contracts worth about 37 billion kilowatt hours (kWh) with resellers, utilities and industrial customers in Germany. It acquired 15 new customers, extended 16 existing contracts and agreed on other additional quantities.

Contrary to the overall market development, WINGAS managed to grow again in 2009. Although the general demand for energy fell as a result of the financial crisis, WINGAS was able to increase total sales in 2009 to 308 billion kWh. This represents a 1.7 percent increase on the previous year. The 19 percent jump in sales by WINGAS in the first quarter of 2010 compared to the previous year lays the foundations for a successful business year in 2010.
