Description
Petroleum Development Oman is an Omani company that finds and produces oil and gas from its concession area, which covers a large part of the Sultanate of Oman - approximately 114,000 square kilometres, extending from the Lekhwair field in the north to beyond Marmul in the south. PDO produces over 90 per cent of the oil and 100 per cent of the gas in the Sultanate and makes a major contribution to the economy and development of the nation.
The Company is owned by the Government of Oman (which has a 60% interest), the Royal Dutch/Shell Group (which has a 34% interest), Total (which has a 4% interest) and Partex (which has a 2% interest). The first economic find of oil was made in 1962, and the first consignment of oil was exported in 1967.
PDO employs more than 4,300 people, more than 80 per cent of whom are Omani, which makes it the second largest employer of Omani nationals after the Government. The Company also works with contractor staff of more than 10,000 people.
