Description
Petrobras was founded in 1953 to operate in the Brazilian oil sector. Over more than four decades the company has become the country's leader in the distribution of oil products and is now one of the largest twenty major oil companies in the world today, leading the sector in the implementation of the most advanced deep-water technology, for oil production.
The Exploration & Production (E&P) body of Petrobras is responsible for research, location, identification, development, production and incorporation of oil and natural gas reserves in Brazil. E&P is structured on Business Units (BU). Each BU is responsible for managing a group of exploration and production concessions, operational and administrative facilities, with own revenues and costs and liable for the results. BU organization was based on criteria such as geographical location, similar geology and stage of development of the concessions, plus available infrastructure and size.
E&P, in partnership with other areas of the company, encouraged by the fact that a large part of the Brazilian reserves were restricted to very deep offshore basins, has raised Petrobras to top world ranking in development and application of deepwater exploration and production technology.
Petrobras Internacional S.A.
Petrobras Internacional S.A., a Petrobras subsidiary, was incorporated on 5 April 1972 for the sole purpose of operating abroad in all segments of the oil industry.
Since it began, BRASPETRO operated in oil exploration and production and in 1999 extended its interests into the downstream segment in Bolivia.
As a result of the change in the Petrobras management model adopted in 2000, the activities conducted by BRASPETRO were integrated to the Petrobras holding and managed by the latter's international area.
Currently in partnership with more than 80 oil companies, it has subsidiaries and branch offices in Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, United States, Nigeria and Trinidad & Tobago.
Braspetro carries out its activities in the upstream, (exploration and production) and downstream (refining, marketing and commercialization, transportation and logistics) sectors and, provides oil well drilling and engineering services.
In order to bring the company model closer to the management model, in 2002 it was unnecessary to continue with BRASPETRO as an institution. It was then merged with Petrobras through a Special Petrobras Shareholders' Meeting on 30 September 2002, thus concluding the restructuring process begun in 2000.
