Since its creation in 1976, Petróleos de Venezuela, S.A. (PDVSA) has become one of the world's leading energy corporations. PDVSA is the parent company of the Corporation, which is owned by the Republic of Venezuela, and is charged with the development of the petroleum, petrochemical and coal industry, and is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and controlling the operational activities of its divisions, both in Venezuela and abroad.
PDVSA Exploration and Production is responsible for the development of oil, gas and coal production, and the manufacture Orimulsion® . The division comprises the following business units: PDVSA Exploration, PDVSA Production, PDVSA Orinoco Belt, Bitor / Carbozulia, and CVP.
Venezuela exports over 2.7 million barrels per day of crude and products, 60% of which goes to the United States, PDVSA's largest market. Most of its products in this market are sold by PDVSA's CITGO subsidiary, the third-largest gasoline supplier in the U.S., and the largest in terms of the number of sales outlets. Strategic downstream investments have helped the Corporation to increase its market position for refined products in the Atlantic Basin. PDVSA is also making significant efforts to increase placements in Central America, South America and the Caribbean region.
In Europe, Ruhr Oel GmbH, PDVSA's 50-50 joint-venture with Veba Oel AG, supplies the market with oil products and chemicals. AB Nynäs, of which PDVSA owns 50%, is the largest supplier of naphthenic lubricants to Europe, where it is also a leader in the asphalt market.
For the worldwide distribution of its products, the corporation possesses a tanker fleet run which has added eight new, double-hulled tankers to provide greater environmental protection, and has recently ordered four more product carriers.
