Description
In the field of Energy, Mitsui & Company's five priority business areas are as follows:
1. Overseas LNG production and marketing in Japan and overseas:
Mitsui are working to maximize the profitability of existing projects in Abu Dhabi, the Northwest Shelf of Australia, Qatar, and Oman, while moving forward to bring the fifth source, the Sakhalin II LNG project, onstream at an early date.
2. Exploration and development of overseas sources of oil and gas:
Efforts are under way to expand exploration and development activities for prime oil and gas resources through the closer cooperation and division of labor with Mitsui Oil Exploration Co., Ltd., an associated company.
In February 2002, the company secured exploration and production rights in the Block 9 oil fields of Oman.
3. Crude oil and petroleum product trading in Japan and overseas:
Mitsui are maintaining and expanding their position in global oil and petroleum product trading, primarily in niche markets.
4. Domestic petroleum refining and marketing of oil and gas:
As the Japanese oil industry undergoes further consolidation, Mitsui plan to take maximum advantage of the superior position of Kyokuto Petroleum Industries in the domestic refining industry, while strengthening the operating and financial positions of Mitsui Oil & Gas.
5. Entry into new businesses:
Mitsui will continue to identify and judge the prospects for emerging opportunities, including power retailing, environmental businesses, GTL, and DME, as well as to pursue specific businesses that are assigned a high priority.
