Description
Korea National Oil Corporation (KNOC) was founded in 1979 to guarantee stable supplies of petroleum, a critical resource for the nation’s businesses and households. Its role is to discover oil resources, maintain petroleum stockpiles, and domestic distribution.
KNOC assumed a leading role in exploration in Vietnam’s Block 15-1, which started producing crude oil in October 2003. Petroleum E&P activities are currently underway on the Korean continental shelf as well as in 12 overseas countries. KNOC’s exploration activities on the continental shelf led to the discovery of natural gas in the Donghae-1 Gas Field, which commenced production in September 2004. The production of the first-ever Korean-origin natural gas propelled Korea into the ranks of the world’s oil-producing countries.
