Description
Centrica source the gas and electricity they need to supply their residential and industrial customers in Great Britain through a team of specialists working for Centrica Energy. Centrica Energy consists of their upstream gas production, electricity generation and renewable asset operations, wholesale and certain industrial gas sales activities, and their energy procurement optimisation and scheduling unit.
International
Centrica Energy is expanding its involvement in international exploration and production following on from continued successful operations in the UKCS (since 1997). Focus countries are those that have gas resources which can be exploited to be piped or shipped (in the form of LNG) back to the UK. The gas will serve Centrica's UK customer base in place of declining UK supplies. Many staff in Centrica's expanding International Development Team are using their considerable experience gained with other E&P companies to select the best upstream opportunities, from ground floor exploration and acquisitions through to existing production. In 2006 offices were opened in Lagos (Nigeria) and Stavanger (Norway). Centrica Energy has two gas prone blocks in Nigeria and has committed to a work programme to build gas reserves for delivery to an LNG plant.
22% of Centrica's UK gas needs were sourced from overseas in 2006
Electricity
Centrica generate electricity through their gas-fired power stations in the UK and US and through a growing portfolio of wind assets and purchasing agreements.
£750m committed to developing renewable generation
Gas Storage
The company's Rough storage facility is the UK's largest gas store, providing more than 70% of the country's storage capacity. The Rough facility stores gas under the North Sea for British Gas and for other customers.
70% of the UK's storage capacity is owned by Centrica Storage
